Shorebird kill - George Lake, Hammond, Indiana - September 10, 2005

On the morning of Saturday, September 10, Ken Brock, Larry Peavler, and I found several shorebird species dead or dying on exposed mud at George Lake in Hammond. These birds seemed to have been poisoned by some form of toxin in the water or the mud.

This photo shows (from top to bottom) a juvenile Black-bellied Plover, a Pectoral sandpiper, three juvenile Least Sandpipers, three juvenile Semipalmated Sandpipers, and a Western Sandpiper.
