Dragonfly and Damselfly

inventory of odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) at gateway national recreation area

Thirty-seven odonate species were recorded across 38 sites surveyed at Gateway National Recreation Area (GATE) during 2004 and 2005. Two of these species are state listed in New York, Needham's skimmer (Libellula needhami) and Rambur's forktail (Ischnura ramburii). Of the three National Parks in New York and New Jersey surveyed for odonates during 2004 and 2005 (Fire Island National Seashore, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, and GATE), GATE showed the greatest species richness and number of sites with odonate species. The most abundant odonate species at GATE were familiar bluet (Enallagma civile), blue dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis), citrine forktail (Ischnura hastata), and swamp darner (Epiaeschna heros). Overall, GATE contains several marshes and coastal ponds that contained permanent water and emergent vegetation and supported odonate breeding. In addition to supporting breeding odonates, several sites at GATE offered good foraging habitat and cover for migrating odonates.   report (3.3 MB)  mirror

Odonate Species of New Jersey

Familiar Bluet (Enallagma civile) is a common blue damselfly.  Males are light blue with black bands and stripes. Familiar Bluet is among the bluets that have a lot more blue than black, particularly on the 3rd abdominal segment, which helps to separate it from another very common bluet, Tule Bluet.  Female bluets are quite variable; can be blue, olive, tan or whitishThis one here is washed with turquoise and olive.

Familiar Bluets oviposit in tandem (a picture found on Web), with the female depositing eggs below the surface of a quiet backwater while the male hovers overhead, holding her by the back of the "neck."

Dragonfly: Hind wings broader than front wings.  Stout-bodies, wings always held outstretched.
Damselfly: Front and hind wings similar, narrow at base.  Slender-bodied, wings held clasped above the body or at an angle.
