Kissena Field Trip, Oct. 10, 2009

October 12, 2009 by dlschulman

Eastern Meadowlark, Vesper, Field, and White-crowned Sparrows, Red-headed Woodpecker, and Woodcock were just some of the highlights of QCBC's Kissena Park field trip, led by Eric Miller.  Sparrows are always a highlight of this trip, and despite the ball-playing activities on the fields, Eric and the astute birders of QCBC were able to locate 2 Vesper and 3 immature White-crowned Sparrows, as well as Savannah, Song, Swamp, White-throated, Chipping, and a host of others.   Kinglets, Phoebes, Sapsuckers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, and Meadowlarks (!) were plentiful, and a Red-headed Woodpecker was spied flying through.

The walk covered areas of the park proper and what is called the Kissena Corridor. I believe the corridor is where the group found an adult male Red-necked Pheasant. It is always a thrill to know that the Pheasants are still here.  For me, birding Kissena Park brings back memories of Al Ott, who introduced me to the park.  I am sure Al would have loved today's walk.
