The notion of “flash-frozen” mammoths is so wide-spread, that in some circles (particularly Art Bell, Immanuel Velikovsky, Charles Hapgood, Randall Carlson fans) it is considered common knowledge. It is often cited as “evidence” to support claims that a sudden catastrophic event plunged the Earth back into an “ice age,” instantly freezing Mammoths and other megafauna, while they were eating.

Excess mortality of COVID-19

The EUROMOMO project is a sentinel surveillance system for excess mortality – their ‘canary in the coal mine’ for infectious diseases. Their data allows us to compare seasonal excess mortality between participating countries by analysing how far their reported overall deaths deviate from expected seasonal standards.
And what does it tell us? It shows us that Sweden is faring well when compared to England and Spain, and only doing slightly worse than Switzerland, but much worse than neighboring Norway or Denmark.
Comment:
Sweden directly benefited from surrounding nations border lockdown with it because of their COVD19 policy hence their seasonal excess mortality data (EUROMO) must be adjusted accordingly to account for the almost total lack of seasonal influenza and other Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) primarily effecting the aged in 2020 in that country. A comparative year on year weighted average will be misleading.

8/12/2023 (Sat) report: 80 people dead, making the fires one of the deadliest natural disasters in Hawaii’s history, and the nation’s deadliest wildfire since the 2018 Camp fire in California killed 85 people. src
8/13/2023 (Sun) report: By Saturday, the death toll had reached 93, making the fire among the worst natural disasters in Hawaii’s history, and the nation’s deadliest wildfire since a blaze in northeast Minnesota killed hundreds of people in 1918.

The toll from the wildfires makes this the deadliest natural disaster in the state in decades, surpassing a 1960 tsunami that killed 61 people. An even deadlier tsunami in 1946, prior to Hawaii's statehood, killed more than 150 on the Big Island, prompting the development of an outdoor siren alarm system.

Overly dry vegetation that acted as fuel, the ongoing drought, strong winds from Hurricane Dora, a high-pressure system and dryness of the atmosphere made for a devastating combination that allowed the flames to spread at a faster pace than firefighters could contain them.

The warning system was notably silent on Maui before residents were forced to run for their lives Tuesday, survivors and officials said. Instead, alerts on cellphones, televisions and radios went out across the island, but widespread power outages and cell signal loss made it unclear how successful that warning was. src

“It's not like hurricane force winds are unknown to Hawaii, or dry brush, or red flag conditions," Tokuda said. "We did not learn our lesson" from 2018's Hurricane Lane, which led to brush fires on Maui and Oahu. src

In August 2018, three brush fires broke out as Hurricane Lane neared the island, charring more than 2,000 acres in Maui, forcing dozens to flee their homes and knocking out power to thousands of residents.

“The approaching storm stretched public safety resources and complicated the suppression response, with strong winds grounding air support and the fire forcing evacuation of a storm shelter within hours of predicted hurricane landfall,” according to a 2021 report from Maui County.

The fires burned 21 residential structures, 27 vehicles, and an about 150 acres of active farmland, making them among the most destructive in state history, according to the report. src

What is the history of tsunamis in Hawaii?

Since 1812, there have been a total of 135 confirmed tsunamis in Hawaii, according to the International Tsunami Information Center from the United Nations.

The worst tsunami in Hawaii, in terms of damage and deaths, occurred in 1946. An 8.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska created a 16-foot-tall tsunami that created $150 million in damage (2016 dollars). There were 158 deaths: 121 on Hawaii Island (96 in Hilo), 17 on Kauai, 14 on Maui and 6 on Oahu. src

Nickerson Beach, Osprey platform at Marina next to Lido Beach Passive Nature Area, Oceanside MNSA

Nickerson: Oystercatcher young. Common Tern, babies to high-school student (big and look similar to adult). Least Tern incubating; I see many eggs. Skimmer, a family with two parents and 2 babies; all others are still incubating. Piping Plover babies and immature.
Osprey platform: 2 nestlings.
MNSA:
Clapper Rail. Purple Martin. Green Heron. Yellow-crowned Night Heron. Great Egret. Tern. Laughing Gull. Barn Swallow (家燕). Yellowlegs. Willet. etc.
Seaside Dragonlet, many.
Three Ospreys are not fledged, still in the nest. But two are trying to fly so they will soon leave the nest in a few days.
Take good pictures of Saltmarsh Sparrow.

Note:
(House) Wrens covet all nest sites on their territory, and can become fierce pillagers of other birds’ nests. This is where they run afoul of some humans. A wren will enter a nest box already in use by another species and peck open the eggs by or will toss out nestlings. They’re notorious for ruining the nests of chickadees, bluebirds and tree swallows and even, at times, killing the adult birds. Wrens will even peck open eggs of birds that nest out in the open, like robins and cardinals, even though they have no use for the nest site. src

Jones Beach: Dunlin. Savannah Sparrow (I did not id it for a long time). Snow Bunting, FOS. Red Crossbill, FOS. Nuthatch. Black Scoter, FOS. Possibly Common Goldeneye but the birder says it is not; probably Scaup or other duck. Scaup. Brant. etc.
Point Lookout: Common Loon. Purple Sandpiper (1).
